A discussion on workplace safety

 A discussion on workplace safety

The concept of workplace safety is multifaceted. It encompasses a lot of things that we might not be able to amalgamate in one piece of writing! A safe workplace contributes to a lot of things – they contribute silently to the credibility and integrity of the work arena. Here are a few of the pluses of clinging to as many safety measures at your workplace as you can –
  • It satisfies employees and enhances their productivity

  • Better compliance of the employees with workplace ethics

  • Lesser and lesser absenteeism and sick leaves

  • Cost curtailment due to lesser workplace accidents and injuries

  • Greater credibility of both the employer and the organization

Let’s go straight into the safety measure that employers and companies can adopt to make it a better place to work for their employees and/or co-workers. But, having safety measures and protection equipment in place isn’t enough at all. All employees and workers of the organization need to be aware of the safety measures that are present in their workplace and their applicability too.

Safety measures at the workplace

 Keeping the correct posture

Work that involves sitting tight in your office chair for a span of 2 to 3 hours at a stretch (before you finally take that much-awaited tea break)! Strictly speaking of the in-office jobs, you need to save your “back” if you wish to fit and fine. The use of ergonomic furniture, especially ergonomic chairs is highly recommended for this.

Safety signs are important

A proper demarcation of areas within a workplace that are potentially hazardous and/or store dangerous equipment needs to be labeled mandatorily. Colored tapes, signboards (with prohibition, caution, danger signs, or directions showing the emergency exits) are necessary safety steps in an organization.

Wearing the proper safety equipment

This varies from occupation to occupation. It could be the examination gowns worn by healthcare professionals or the safety vests put on by the industrial workers. Protection garments safeguard employees from several hazards like –
  • Fire or other combustible agents

  • Heavy machinery that could lead to injuries and accidents.

  • Contamination in healthcare facilities and food processing units.

Technology at its best during the lockdown days

It’s been more than a year now that we have been compelled to abandon ‘outdoor fun’. You and I, in turn, have earnestly thanked technology, at some point of time or the other, for helping us cope with this harsh ‘new normal’. Online streaming of movies, chatting apps, video conferencing with colleagues and business partners, music apps, etc. have done their best to keep us going, haven’t they? Think of the music apps nowadays that come along with ‘collaborative playlists’ – the creator of the playlist decides upon a group of friends or family members who can have access to the playlist. In a way, therefore, you are socializing! Again, you are not to forget the OTT platforms on which people have spent hours watching their favourite content. Home schooling This has again been successfully possible for the one of the biggest boons to mankind named ‘technology’. Initially parents, especially the working mums and dads found themselves hard-pressed between office work and...

Heating pads – how they come to the rescue when you’re in pain?

Heating Pads You often resort to a hot bath or some form of heat application when there's been an incessantly flustering pain in a certain body part of yours! Why does a heat application or the prompt use of a heating pad occur to us when we are in pain? Here's the science behind heat therapy… How does heat therapy work? Heating, in a particular body part dilates the blood vessels which allows a better flow of blood. Before getting into why enhanced blood relieves pain, we need to dig into the cause of the pain or soreness! Muscle pain and soreness emanate from the accumulation of lactic acid in that particular part of the body. Why did lactic acid build up in that body part? Lactic acid may build up in an area that is receiving the ‘bad blood’. By bad blood, I meant to say an inadequate blood flow that causes the insufficient supply of oxygen to the area. This results in muscle soreness and aches in the concerned region. As the application of heat normalizes the blood f...
